About this Event

Join IRL for a special panel discussion to mark Islamic History Month!

IHM celebrates the many contributions of Muslim communities to Canada – and is a time to reflect on the achievements and diverse stories of Muslims across the country. Amid rising Islamophobia and misinformation, the role of journalism and the media is more critical than ever. But where are we at when it comes to representation of Islam and Muslims in Canadian media?
We're convening a panel of journalists with deep personal and professional expertise on this topic who will share their own distinct experiences, realities, and hopes about representation – the stories that are told, how narratives are shaped, and who gets to tell those stories.

Panelists Shireen Ahmed (CBC Sports), Shenaz Kermalli (Toronto Metropolitan University), and Steven Zhou (National Council for Canadian Muslims) will dig into their own experiences as Muslim journalists in a still not-so-diverse industry – and how journalists and audiences alike can make their voices and stories heard.
Stick around for snacks and socializing at U of T's Innis College and chat (vent?) about the industry with fellow journos, students, mentors, and alumni from all five (!) of our Shared Bylines cohorts.
WHERE: Innis College Screening Room (Room 222E, second floor), 2 Sussex Avenue, Toronto
WHEN: Tuesday, October 28 at 7 p.m. ET (doors at 6:30)
COST: SB events are FREE, but we encourage donations toward a charitable cause (to be confirmed soon & we'll update with a link to the organization!)
---

SHARED BYLINES is a scholarship and mentorship program that aims to help BIPOC student journalists overcome barriers to entering the media industry by offering financial and professional support for those who have traditionally been underrepresented in Canadian media to allow them to succeed.
