SHAPING AIRRope and Harness
Gaia Santuccio and Magalie Lanriot
About the Workshop
During these days, Gaia and Magalie will dive deep into intertwining their unique methods with the intention to enrich and challenge each other’s practices. Through this collaborative exploration, they will share their discoveries and insights at the end of the journey.
This workshop invites participants to engage in a dynamic exchange and exploration of movement styles and quality, using the aerial rope and harness as tools for both creative expression and technical investigation.
Together, we will explore the intersection of rope, harness, and dance, digging into concepts such as the creation of spaces and pathways as well as free movement and the investigation of physicality in the air and on the floor.
Participants will be invited to experiment, discover, and reflect on their own movement practice while engaging with new tools and perspectives. Gaia and Magalie will guide you through exercises and improvisation designed to deepen body awareness and enhance your ability to research and create.
Who is this Workshop For?
This workshop is perfect for all aerialists and dancers with aerial experience looking to expand their aerial practice and explore new ways of interacting with the aerial apparatus. Come ready to push boundaries, connect with others, and discover fresh approaches to movement, both in the air and on the ground.
Requirements
We require participants to have good body awareness, allowing them to move and research with other professionals and practitioners equally. We welcome dancers with knowledge in aerial disciplines; any aerial discipline is acceptable. It is important to have the upper body strength to hang and move in the air, as we will be spending time researching both harness and rope. A good level of stamina is required, as well as curiosity to research and exchange together in a positive environment.
About the Teachers
Gaia and Magalie first crossed paths at the European Aerial Dance Festival in the summer of 2024. As they observed each other’s practices, they quickly recognized a shared creative approach and a common interest in the same areas of research. Drawn to this connection, they decided to come together for an immersive four-day experience in January 2025, where they will dive deep into exchanging their methods, culminating in the two-day workshop at the end of it, on January 25th and 26th.
About Gaia Santuccio
Gaia Santuccio, originally from Sicily, is an aerial rope artist, teacher, and researcher. Movement exploration through knots and sensing is the heart of her creative and artistic investigation and the focal point of the methodologies she has been developing. Structured improvisation and communication among all bodies are pillar approaches within her research work. Gaia’s teaching encourages participants to discover and cultivate their unique movement styles and language. She aims to inspire individuals to think through movement, fostering a deep, intimate connection with the rope for a more conscious and embodied practice. Her choreographic research is designed to nurture adaptive, creative, and artistic skills, empowering dancers and aerialists to develop a richer, more expressive vocabulary. After completing a Master’s degree in Contemporary Circus Practices at DOCH in Stockholm, where she graduated in June 2022, Gaia participated in the pilot year of ICCAR (International Circus Centre for Artistic Research), directed by Roberto Magro. Before this, she trained in Etienne Decroux's mime technique at Moveo in Barcelona, and graduated from both Circomedia in Bristol and the National Centre for Circus Arts in London in 2014. Currently, Gaia is working on a book detailing the "Rope Manipulation" methodology she has developed since 2020, set for publication in 2026. She is also a member of NèonTeatro, an Italian theatre company that works with individuals with different abilities. In addition, Gaia is creating her first solo performance, Isola-Ta.
About Magalie Lanriot
Magalie is a dancer, choreographer, and teacher. She began her career as a contemporary dancer, but it was through vertical dancing that she found her home. In 2014, she was in the cast of 'Rites of War', a performance by Lindsey Butcher & Darshan Singh Bhuller (Gravity and Levity). This inspired her to develop her career as an internationally acclaimed choreographer and performer. Since then, Magalie has dedicated herself to performing, teaching, and researching vertical and contemporary dance. She develops her projects in association with the University of Lisbon and the National Park of Mafra, providing international formation and research for Vertical and Contemporary Dance in Portugal and Europe. As an independent artist, Magalie teaches at the Olga Roriz Dance Company and at International Festivals and Schools. She also mentors and participates in several independent projects, one of those with Olga Roriz, for the movie 'Body Building', directed by Henrique Pina. She has a creative approach to vertical dance embodying evolutions of the form, with a deep physical technique that is used only in service of her creativity, born in the moment.
Since 2021, Magalie and Alex Allan have been working together on research and training workshops "When rope meets Floor" to develop a new language and artistic approach around the rope and the floor, creating a relationship and using the two surfaces as an extension of the body.
