Dive into a world shaped by the sea. Through analogue experiments, workshops, and artist talks, “Shaped by the Sea” invites you to explore how art and science meet in our relationship with the ocean — from cyanotypes to seaweed prints and darkroom sessions.(Danish below)
Through visual experimentation and craft-based practices, the participating artists explore our evolving relationship with the sea. Each work becomes part of an ongoing dialogue, inviting visitors to rediscover the ways we perceive, sense, and care for the ocean that surrounds us.
The exhibition is curated by architect Marina Holst. In collaboration with architecture student Julia Laura Finch and architect and artist Sólja Eyðfinsdóttir, she transforms marine flora into experimental cyanotypes — an analogue photographic process that uses sunlight to produce prints. Representatives from Kend Dit Hav will host a drop-in seaweed print workshop with inspiration for those attending the cyanotype workshop. Graphic designer Henrik Holst facilitates drop-in “travel kit” darkroom sessions, while photographer Karoline Hill presents a documentary photo series exploring the Danish traditions of wooden boat craftsmanship and maritime culture.
“Shaped by the Sea “is organised in collaboration with Kend Dit Hav – an initiative by Aarhus University that raises awareness of the marine environment and inspires new generations to explore, understand, and protect our oceans through learning, research, and creative engagement.
Alongside the exhibition, visitors are invited to meet the artists and take part in drop-in events and workshops that delve into the exhibition’s themes, artistic methods, and analogue techniques.
