Shadow AI and the Browser: Managing Risk in Everyday AI Use

Shadow AI is not simply another form of Shadow IT. It reflects a fundamental change in how data moves through modern organisations - particularly through everyday browser-based workflows - in ways that traditional controls were not designed to manage.

Many organisations also want their teams to use AI tools to work more efficiently, explore ideas and remain competitive. This places IT teams in a central role: enabling AI use while maintaining visibility, governance and appropriate control over sensitive data.

In this session, we examine what Shadow AI looks like in everyday organisations, and the implications for IT teams responsible for security and governance.

The session also looks at how we can support AI adoption by establishing clear, enforceable boundaries around how and where data can be used, informed by real patterns of AI usage and behaviour seen in practice.

We will cover:

• How Shadow AI differs from earlier Shadow IT challenges.
• What real-world AI adoption and usage patterns look like across teams and roles.
• Where sensitive data is commonly exposed in AI-workflows.
• How IT teams can balance AI adoption with governance and oversight.
• What effective Shadow AI governance looks like in real environments.

Katie Whitlock-Baker is a software developer and former technical lead at Deloitte Digital, with experience in security and data protection. She is a co-founder of Fendr, focusing on data-loss risks and practical approaches to managing Shadow AI.

Parit Patel is a technology leader with experience in helping regulated organisations adopt emerging technologies responsibly, with over a decade of experience in Financial Services. He is a co-founder of Fendr, where he works on responsible approaches to AI adoption and governance.
