About this Event
This is an intro to hand sewing suitable for folks who have never touched a needle but it is also an intro to the art of patching using the boro technique from Japan (similar to the Indian Kantha and other mending that combine patches, quilting and embroidery). The borro style is famous for the embroidery style sashiko. It is super simple and yet infinitely complex. A humble craft that sprouts into an astounding art.
You will learn:
- threading a needle, selecting thread, sewing on a button
- the tacking stitch, the running stitch the whip stitch
- patching a hole or tear using the boro technique
- simple sashiko
- if there is time, how to design your own pattern on paper, tips for vector design software like Inkscape
This is a skill share so if you have these skills, feel free to come and share.
Teacher Elle has many years of mending experience and has taught lots of folks intro sewing but is newish to sashiko and excited to share what she has been learning about it. If you get a chance, grab an embroidery book on sashiko bring it to class.
