SEWCITYSEW is a new sewing class series for beginners being offered all summer long at LOVECITYLOVE taught by sewist Lauren Holloway.
About this Event

In this sewing class series for beginners, sewist Lauren Holloway teams up with LOVECITYLOVE to offer three one off sewing workshops: Intro to Sewing Basics, How to Sew A Garment With A Commercial Pattern, and Wall Textiles: Quilting & Applique. Each class will be repeated three times throughout the summer. Participants are welcome to sign up for as many classes as desired. Although these classes are geared toward beginners, sewists of all experience levels are welcome to participate.

Course descriptions

Intro to Sewing Basics (July 5, July 12, August 2, Aug 23)

This course will teach students the basics of sewing machine mechanics, how to thread and operate a sewing machine, source materials and patterns, and how to cut and sew a simple tote bag. Each participant will construct one tote bag during this workshop. Tote bag material will be provided with the cost of the class however, participants are welcome to bring their own fabric.

How to Sew A Garment With A Commercial Pattern (July 19, August 9, August 30)

This course will teach participants how to construct a simple garment from a commercial sewing pattern, while offering tips and tricks on how to read pattern directions, where to buy digital and paper patterns, and how to assemble a digital pattern. Participants are strongly encouraged to bring a beginner level pattern with them.

Once registered, instructor Lauren will send directions on how to quickly and easily purchase a digital pattern online. Once pattern is purchased, students will print out their own patterns on 8.5 X 11 paper prior to attending this class.

Wall Textiles: Quilting & Applique (July 26, August 16, Sept 6)

The focus of this class is on gaining sewing skills to make textile art for the purpose of adorning walls. This class will teach the basics of how to design and sew a simple small scale wall quilt. These same skills can later be applied towards making a larger quilt to be used as a bed cover or incorporated into a garment. Additionally, this course will offer some simple instruction on applique work with a sewing machine to make scrap fabric collage.
