Our 5 week Sew Your Own Clothes – Beginners Course is the perfect place to start if you want to learn how to sew clothes you’ll actually wear, and want a more in-depth introduction to dressmaking than our one day beginner classes. Each class focuses on new dressmaking techniques so that you learn something new every week and build your confidence in dressmaking working with both stretch and woven fabrics.
“Being new to working with patterns, I most valued the help to get the pattern just right for me. The teacher was so encouraging and helpful. An excellent class to attend”.
Our sewing classes are relaxed and friendly, taking place at our beautiful studio at Holme Grange Craft Village in Wokingham, Berkshire. Students get to use our brand new digital Janome sewing machines and class sizes are capped to ensure everyone gets the time and attention they need.
Each course is 5 weeks long and covers the following:
Week 1: Understanding patterns, choosing your correct size and accurate cutting
In your first week, you will learn how to measure yourself accurately, how to choose the correct pattern size for you and how to adjust a dressmaking pattern to fit you, whilst gaining an understanding of how patterns are created. You’ll learn how to read all the signs and markings on a dressmaking sewing pattern, pin and cut fabric accurately and get ready to sew.
Week 2: Sewing Your PJ bottoms and professional finishing
In your second week you will sew your PJ bottoms, learning how to match notches and sew accurately, also adding a waistband. You’ll also learn different options for finishing your seams neatly, using different machine stitches for a professional finish.
Week 3: Hemming and Cutting Your T-Shirt
This week you’ll hem your PJ trousers and discuss different options for hemming by hand and machine. We’ll then move onto choosing your size from our t-shirt pattern, including any adjustments such as lengthening the pattern or sleeves, and adapting the fit for your style. You’ll use a rotary cutter and mat to cut your stretchy fabric.
Week 4 & 5: Sewing Stretch Fabric
In the final two weeks, you’ll learn about how to sew stretch fabrics on a sewing machine whilst sewing up a comfy t-shirt you can either match to your PJ bottoms or wear out and about! From what stitches and needles to use, to how to avoid wobbly seams and using double needles for hemming, we’ll cover it all.

WHAT’S INCLUDED
The class includes expert instruction, use of the machines, tools, threads, elastic, interfacing etc and you’ll keep a copy of both patterns so you can make them again outside the class. Tea, coffee and biscuits are also provided!
YOU NEED TO BRING
You will need 2.5m of light to medium cotton fabric for your pyjama bottoms. We recommend cotton poplin, cotton lawn and brushed cottons.
You’ll need 1.5m of cotton jersey fabric for your t-shirt (avoid viscose jersey or anything too heavy, such as sweatshirting fabric). If you need any help with choosing fabric, please Contact Us.
Depending on the speed that you work at (there’s no pressure to race through!) you may need to prepare/finish some elements at home between sessions. Your tutor will give you clear guidance so you are comfortable doing this. Everyone will need to do some cutting out at home between week 2 & 3.
