Though he has played with many legends of bluegrass in career, he is most known for his twelve years with the legendary, James King Band. During which he was part of two "Album of the Year", a "Song of the Year" and a "Recorded Event of the Year", award winning projects. He was also nominated at "Banjo Player of the Year" during a three year stint with The Bluegrass Brothers.

Currently Kevin is in year 17 leading The KPB throughout the USA and Canada. "Coal-Fired, Pure Kentucky Bluegrass" is the bands motto but, they also deliver classic country, bluegrass gospel, original tunes and grassed up vintage rock. It requires a group of stellar musicians to make all that happen. In addition to Kevin Prater (Belcher, KY.) on mandolin, he is accompanied by Mallory Hindman (Reader, WV.) on fiddle. On guitar, Dalton Smith of (Alderson, WV.,) Larry Cadle of (Galion, OH.) mans the bass position and in banjo, Codie Allen of (Campbellsville, KY.)
