In addition to being known as one of the finest actors of his generation, Charles Laughton also delivered one of American cinema's most indelible directorial one-offs with his and James Agee's adaptation of Davis Grubb's The Night of the Hunter.
Laughton's picture stars Robert Mitchum as Rev. Harry Powell, a widow-making flimflam man who hides his serial killing ways behind his priest garments – that's before getting to his "love" and "hate" knuckle tattoos. On the hunt for a missing batch of stolen cash, Powell sets his sights on Willa Harper (Shelley Winters) as his next target, while her two children John and Pearl fight to protect a secret.
