About this Event
Mirali is an interdisciplinary researcher whose work focuses on the connections between people and nature, and the conflict and peace dynamics that are related to these interactions. She is passionate about the communication of science through art and has conducted research in countries from the Arctic to the South Pacific.
Mirali was awarded the Society's Elodie Sandford Explorer Award for Amateur Phototgraphy for her Expedition Palawan.
In her talk, she will share insights from her expedition which set out to investigate vulnerabilities in the socio-ecological systems of Palawan with the objective to:
- Highlight the overlooked impact of in-migration on ecosystem carrying capacity; and
- To get an accurate abundance estimate for a small, Critically Endangered subpopulation of Irrawaddy dolphins.
The research from this expedition will offer baseline data for informed decision-making and future conservation efforts amidst the fast-changing realities of in-migration, species movement and climate shifts.
