This two‑hour introductory course explains St. Roch Service Dogs’ program and prepares handlers and dogs for potential service work. Participants will learn how we assess a dog’s suitability for service tasks, the baseline obedience skills required for reliable public access, orientation of training terms, and what to expect from program participation.What we cover:
Suitability assessment: key temperament, focus, and health criteria we evaluate to determine if a dog can perform service work.
Public‑access obedience: the core, reliable behaviors expected in public (focused attention, loose‑leash walking, sit/stand/recall under distraction, polite greetings, and calm settling).
Program expectations: timelines, trainer contact, attendance, milestones, and responsibilities of handlers during training and placement.
