About this Event

So you want to create a pollinator garden or a certified wildlife habitat?

NEW SERIES!

Animal pollinators are vital to flowering plant reproduction and most fruit and vegetable production. Honey bee and native solitary bee, butterfly, bat, bird and moth populations have experienced significant declines over the past decade. The loss of native habitat to support them is believed to be a major contributing factor for these declines. But what constitutes a pollinator habitat? Pollinators need food, water, shelter, and space to support nesting sites and robust populations- this is their habitat: an area with a variety of native flowering plants that provide those necessities.

Our goal is to educate you on how to provide better access to nutrition and shelter for pollinators. The important thing is that you do not have to have a huge garden to help! No matter how much space you have, be it an apartment or condo patio, suburban yard or a sizable acreage, you can make a wildlife area and contribute to the health of our native wildlife. In this series, you'll receive an in-depth discussion with everything you'll need to know to make your contribution to supporting pollinators and wildlife in your landscape and garden.

Each class may be taken separately, but are designed to be taken as a comprehensive unit with each class building upon the previous one and leading to the next. Complete notes and handouts are provided, along with a binder so that you may return for each monthly presentation, and obtain a thorough understanding of these concepts:

  • Class 1-Mar 15th: Defining Pollinators- the Bees

What is a pollinator and wildlife habitat, and how do I get certified? To start, a focus on the many species of bees- the harbingers of spring, and their value in the process.

  • Class 2-Apr 26th: Butterflies & Their Importance

The beneficial butterflies, and how to attract a wider range of them by supplying their nectar and critical host plants, both native and adapted.

  • Class 3-May 17th: Beyond Bees- Other Pollinators

This time, we'll focus on pollinators we don't often think about: the bats, moths, fireflies and beetles, along with an introduction to growing a fragrant, evening garden just for them.

  • Class 4- Jun 28th: The Valuable Hummingbirds

They're not just pretty: Hummingbirds can be integral to your pollinator and wildlife support, along with many other species of birds that impact pollination.

  • Class 5- Jul 26th: Summer Pollinator Garden Maintenance

What happens to your pollinators after spring is over? They'll need resources to make it to fall. We'll cover maintaining your pollinator garden in the heat of the summer.

  • Class 6- Aug 23rd: The Habitat in Fall & Winter

Fall can bring on its own challenges to these animals, but winter can be a difficult question of shelter and survival. We'll discuss how to support your pollinators through these difficult months.

BONUS! Save $20! Sign up for the entire series, and get 6 classes for the price of 5. Be sure to select the 'Pollinator Gardens Series Discount' ticket.
