(ed. note - Normally, I would ask Serge for one of his infamous write-ups, but here, I'll have to do my best to fill his shoes.)The late Serge Lotosky opened his write-up for the September 2018 Roundup with the words "[it] is said that legends are made, not born." Well, he would know, because, in this city, Serge was as close to a friggin' legend as we're gonna get. For the last 24 years, Serge built a mountain of greasy combs, bicycle parts, tiki heads, metal sculptures, and fantastic stories in this often miserable burg. His loss has left a mountain-sized hole in our hearts, so we're gonna pay tribute to the possum-squashin', square-scarin', hippie-hatin' greasy-headed hillbilly in the best way we can think of. With gittars, clicking standup bass, and drums making some wild rock 'n' roll!!
Pre- or post-sobriety, Serge always loved a wild party, and we're gonna do our best to bring a Bacchanalia to you March 15 at The Heatley. As the man said himself:
"What's a greaser gonna do.... eat cheese at some pretentious restaurant with a made-up Spanish name ? Drink $20 glasses of Merlot with stockbrokers in skinny suits? Juggle $9 tomatoes at Whole Foods? No! He's (she also) gonna get greasy."
"The Heatley is a rockin' music venue in the heart of Strathcona where hipsters, rockers, hobos and squares converge. Located in a beautiful heritage building that once housed an old-school hardware store, this roots-friendly venue will be the House of Rockabilly" on March 15. To this end, we have enlisted some of Vancouver's finest (and Serge's favourite) musicians for your listening pleasure.
We begin with the local legend and guitar virtuoso, Paul Pigat. Endorsed by none other than legendary guitarist Brian Setzer as one of "the best modern rockabilly players out there," Paul brings his sounds around the world, and will be paying tribute to our fallen friend.
We also have Steve Kozak on the stage. Serge would talk my ear off about Steve's blues guitar skills on a regular basis. Steve has been playing on Vancouver stages and winning awards for decades, and will be bringing us his sweet tones as well.
Finally, but certainly not least, will be Butch and the Lowbrows. Lead by Butch Murphy of the world-famous Nervous Fellas (one of the all-time great Vancouver bands), and backed up by a cavalcade of talent stretching back to the days of the heralded Marine Club (where Serge was the notorious doorman), the Lowbrows will knock your socks off with their wild energy.
So come on down, raise a glass of beer (regular or near) to our fallen amigo. Pay tribute to him the way he would have wanted, by kicking over a drum circle, telling someone they stink of patchouli, and most of all, having a GREASY good time!! Because the best revenge is having fun, so let's have some fun while we donate all the proceeds to Serge's family and cancer research!
