This concert is inspired by its setting. Sir John Soane built the church in 1826, the year Franz Schubert composed his equally radical final String Quartet. Their revolutionary energy burns through Beethoven's 1810 'Serioso' Quartet.

The Kreutzers bring two of their treasured collaborating composers to Bethnal Green. East London -born David Matthews has written them dozens of works. His quintet 'After Sunrise' is inspired by the work of visionary artist Cecil Collins.

Martin Ellerby has long history working with the Kreutzers and Linda Merrick. His 'Sentinel' is subtitled ‘Remember…’. This contemplative work responds to the events of 3rd March 1943, on the steps of the adjacent Underground Station. The piece counterpoints the 'Stairway to Heaven Memorial' by Harry Paticas,for Arboreal Architecture, which floats over the site of the tragedy.
