Gabriella Bukoski of Shawano, Wisconsin, is performing her senior viola recital in Demmer Recital Hall of Ripon College’s C.J. Rodman Center for the Arts, Saturday, Nov. 15, at 4 p.m.She will be accompanied by Adjunct Instructor of Music Deb MacKenzie on piano. Admission is free and open to the public.
The program will feature pieces from a variety of different time periods, including “Prélude” from “Suite No. 1” by J.S. Bach, “Adagio and Rondo” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, “Sonatina No. 1 in D Major” by Franz Schubert, “Salut d'amour” by Edward Elgar, a set of three songs from “Songs by Rebecca Clarke” and an arrangement of “Nights in White Satin” by The Moody Blues.
“I picked pieces that I enjoyed listening to and playing, teacher recommendations and wanting to include music from different time periods,” Bukoski said.
Bukoski said her mom played the viola for many years and encouraged her to learn as well. Her mom believed it was important for her to engage with music from an early age, which Bukoski said she is grateful for. However, her passion for playing the viola started in high school when she had more opportunities.
Bukoski is majoring in music education and will be graduating in the spring. She said she is excited to showcase the years of work she has put into learning viola at Ripon.
“This recital is important for me because it will probably be my last solo performance, and it is also exciting to show off what I have learned during my years at Ripon College,” Bukoski said. “I think that people should come and listen because the viola is not normally a solo instrument. People are used to hearing solo violin or cello and this could be a very different experience for them.”
