Born in Orlando to a family with roots in Tobago and the UK, Selwyn Birchwood discovered the blues as a teenager after hearing Jimi Hendrix and witnessing Buddy Guy live — a moment that set him on his musical path. Immersing himself in the music of Albert King, Freddie King, Muddy Waters, and Lightnin’ Hopkins, Birchwood quickly developed his own powerful style. At 19, he was taken under the wing of veteran bluesman Sonny Rhodes, who invited him on the road and helped shape both his musicianship and bandleading. Birchwood formed The Selwyn Birchwood Band in 2010 and soon broke through nationally after winning the 2013 International Blues Challenge in Memphis.
His Alligator Records debut Don’t Call No Ambulance earned rave reviews and won both the Blues Music Award and Living Blues Award for Best New Artist Debut. Since then, Birchwood has continued to push the blues forward with albums like Pick Your Poison, Living In A Burning House, and Electric Swamp Funkin’ Blues, blending traditional blues with funk, soul, and electrifying guitar and lap steel.
A relentless touring act, Birchwood has performed at major festivals around the world, from Montreux Jazz Festival to Chicago Blues Festival. As Guitar World notes, “Selwyn Birchwood is the real deal — taking the blues tradition and making it something new.”
Antar Goodwin, a Philadelphia-based roots and blues artist, blends the grit of classic blues with the soul of Americana in his music.
