About this Event
On the surface, young Aaron Whistler (Cooper Raiffff) has all the right resources to slowly process his grief over the tragic death of Leah (Kaitlyn Dever), his little sister and best friend. He’s got wit and smarts as an on-the-rise comedy writer running his own site, access to therapy, and a supportive family full of equally intelligent and capable people: his mother Page (Hope Davis), a former journalist; his dad Robert (David Duchovny) and sister Emily (Lucy Boynton), two civil rights attorneys sharing a practice; a caring romantic interest in Camila (Ariela Barer)… Still, Aaron battles with a severe case of PTSD, being the one to find his sister when she killed herself after years of struggles with mental illness. And even for a loving family as equipped as the Whistlers, getting him the right kind of help that he needs is no easy task. Making the matters more complicated? Another devastating disease that enters the family’s orbit at the same time. Comedian Adam Cayton-Holland makes his feature screenwriting debut through an insightful, compassionate, and bitingly funny story based on his 2018 book, "Tragedy Plus Time: A Tragi-comic Memoir," transposing his real-life experiences into a warm and deeply original fifilm about how he survived his own PTSD after discovering the body of his younger sister and best friend, Lydia, in their Denver home in 2012. His screenplay finds its perfect directorial match in Jay Duplass, a master of observant and empathetic tales that seamlessly blend life’s odd, tragic and surprisingly humor-fifilled beats. 101mins.
