Starting April 13, pop into Wild Rose Artisans to see the first solo show, See What Sticks,,of local mixed media artist Rochelle Hartman of Tinfoil+Raccoon Artifacts. Hartman came to the practice of art in her late 50s, having found herself unexpectedly unemployed. During her year off, she cobbled together a studio in her basement and started playing with her collection of vintage print materials and ephemera to develop a distinctive aesthetic the she thinks of as “morbid nostalgia” juxtaposing photographic or illustrated vintage images, often altered, on top of woven paper backgrounds. Much of her work scans as absurd or non-sequitur, an intentional response to the proliferation of memetic and dead-eyed thieving proliferation of AI-driven expression. Mostly, she hopes to amuse and inspire others to play with the materials available to them. The theme of her show, See What Sticks is a nod to Hartman’s neurodivergence and resultant inability to bring consistency to anything she might try her hand at. For Hartman, art is play, joy, and, discovery. For Hartman, art is limitless.
A meet-the-artist reception and show opening for See What Sticks is Saturday, April 18, 2-4 pm in the gallery space at Wild Rose Artisans, 115 N 6th Street, Springfield. Light refreshments and beverages will be available. Hartman will be available at 11 am with a variety of materials for those who want to make a little something or nerd out on the beauty of mid-century magazine illustration. In addition to larger pieces, there will be lots of smaller items, including cards, magnets, and earrings, at friendly price points. The show will run through mid-May.
