Seconds for Survival: The FOCUS System for Threat Recognition
Most officers are trained to react. FOCUS trains you to see — before the threat becomes a crisis. Built from the largest study of officer-involved encounters ever conducted, the FOCUS System (Field Observable Cues for Unknown Situations) gives law enforcement a structured, evidence-based framework for reading human behavior in real time. It converts what you observe in the field into a calibrated, documentable risk assessment that supports better decisions, stronger reports, and outcomes that hold up in court. This is not criminal profiling. This is science applied to survival.
In this course, you will learn to:
Recognize Pre-Incident Behavioral Indicators — Identify observable cues and suspicious patterns of conduct (PRISM) before a threat materializes, using a research-based framework.
Apply the FOCUS System (Field Observable Cues for Unknown Situations) — Use a structured, real-time tool to convert observable behaviors into a calibrated risk tier that supports sound tactical decision-making.
Establish Baseline & Detect Anomalies — Understand normal human behavior patterns in context so that deviations stand out, giving officers the ability to act left of bang rather than react after the fact.
Understand Human Behavior Principles — Learn why humans telegraph intentions, follow predictable patterns, and how those "honest signals" can be read and used to assess threat level in real time.
Manage Cognitive & Emotional Performance Under Stress — Develop skills in situational awareness, attention management, cognitive load management, and emotional regulation during high-pressure encounters.
Analyze Threat Using Capability, Opportunity & Intent — Apply a structured threat analysis model to assess and articulate the totality of circumstances in any encounter.
Generate a FOCUS Risk Index (FRI) Score — Calculate a documented, numerical risk rating (0–10) from observed indicators and amplifiers that aligns with Graham's totality of circumstances standard.
Articulate Decisions in Reports & Testimony — Build legally sound documentation using the FRI Template, converting field observations into specific, articulable language that survives cross-examination.
Apply Relevant Case Law — Understand how courts evaluate pre-incident indicators and officer decisions, including landmark rulings that support behavior-based threat assessment.
De-escalate & Respond Proportionally — Apply the Read → React → Respond framework to influence, de-escalate, or lawfully manage high-risk encounters in a way that is consistent with policy and defensible in court.
