Park: in the open area near the ferry.
Meet: at the entrance to the barge-like ferry. We will be walking on the free ferry to get to the island--a 5 minute ride. Going to be fun having the dogs on the ferry!
DESCRIPTION
Barnston Island is a hidden gem in the Greater Vancouver metropolitan area, offering a peaceful escape from the city. The island is known for its flat, scenic 10-kilometre loop road, which is perfect for cycling or a leisurely walk.
Visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the Fraser River, farmland, boats, old buildings, and distant mountains. The island is rich in agricultural land and Aboriginal history, with residents either being part of the laid-back farming community or the Katzie First Nation.
While most farms are private, cycling past the fields and livestock provides a refreshing contrast to urban life. The island is accessible via the Barnston Island Ferry, a short ride from the mainland, and is a destination worth exploring for both locals and visitors.
We will walk as far as our group wants to. Dogs must be leashed at all times.
IMPORTANT NOTES
1) Bathrooms and picknick tables are located at the
Robert Point Rest Area, north of the ferry terminal, an
approximately 2 km walk from the ferry terminal (see map
under the 'Websites' section below0.
2)The road is completely open, with no tree coverage.
3) Some sections of the road are bumpy and uneven.
