As part of this event, we will be conducting CSIRO microplastic surveys along the foreshore to help us understand what types of plastics and litter are accumulating here and in what quantity. We will then make our way around the Estuary to our other quarterly monitoring sites at Len Howard Conservation Park, Erskine and Austin Bay Reserve, South Yunderup. All collected data will contribute to the open-access National Plastics Portal, helping shape smarter research and waste management strategies nationwide.
The Ramsar-listed Peel-Harvey estuary is the largest and most diverse estuarine complex in south-western Australia. Like many of our urban waterways, it faces numerous environmental challenges, including from pollutants, such as plastic and other litter. Results of recent clean-ups in the area found that 82.5% of litter found in the Peel-Harvey region comprised plastic food packaging, cigarette butts, and hard plastic fragments, which all have very long decomposition times and can devastate marine and bird life.
