What do you do when you are told that someone did not exist in the past but you are certain they must have? In this talk I introduce a historian's approach to critically engaging with the archive to find a way to tell stories thought to be impossible. Tracing "the woman photographer" in Japan from the 1930s to the 1970s I show how she was represented in the mass media, colluded with the Japanese government during World War Two, and worked to be recognized as a professional and protest systemic inequality in postwar Japan. In doing so I demonstrate how critically reframing the archive provides new possibilities for telling new stories in the present.
