Will Roy is a third generation San Franciscan who has over 20 years experience delivering trainings and workshops centering the humanity of those at the margins, specifically children and folks who are incarcerated. Beginning with his own incarceration in 1997 and release in 2003 from the California Youth Authority (now the Department of Juvenile Justice), Will has dedicated his life to the transformation and transcendence of himself, his loved ones, and his community.

As a leader in the efforts to reimagine how we support and respond to young people in our communities, Will began his career working for the Beat Within, a weekly newsletter of writing and art from juvenile halls, jails, and prisons across the U.S. During his time at the Beat Within, Will was thrust into the media to speak about the trauma he experienced as a ward of California’s Youth Pr*son. Simultaneously, Will also went back into juvenile hall facilities in and around the Bay Area to teach writing workshops, coach and mentor the young people. Will is also a writer himself and has been published in the San Francisco Chronicle, SF Bayview newspaper, Jordan Magazine, the foreword for Dwight Abbott’s “I Cried, You Didn’t Listen,” the UC Davis Law Journal, and several other publications.

After working with the Beat Within for 10 years and transitioning out as the Program Director, Will went back to school and obtained a B.A. in Psychology from UC Berkeley. After graduating, Will began working as the Education Director for One Family, a program of Community Works West. As the Education Director, Will developed parenting curriculum tailored for incarcerated parents, facilitated parenting classes with incarcerated parents, and managed parent-child contact visits in the San Francisco County J*il.

In his current role as Associate Director for Community Education & Partnerships for Safe & Sound (a child abuse prevention organization in San Francisco), Will manages teams that provide child abuse prevention trainings in the community, partners with family resource centers as the supportive body, and provides training platforms for agencies that work with children and families in San Francisco.
