Sean William Randall is a Canadian-born visual artist. In 1992, he left his career as an architect to devote himself entirely to painting. Sean’s works have been exhibited in public and private galleries and can be found in corporate, private and public collections in Canada and the U.S.A. He lives and works in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
A brilliant colour sensibility coupled with incisive awareness has made Sean William Randall one of Canada’s most interesting painters working today. Brash confidence is evinced in his work where one minute he demonstrates a profound love for Canadian landscape painting, and the next moment setting the tradition on fire by painting flaming wreckage streaking across the pastel prairie sky. His work invokes meta-cycles concerning image inundation and the way these images function in our subconscious and mediate our experiences as citizens of the 21st century.
Steeped in a pervasive sense that there ought to be something there that isn’t, the paintings hang in eerie suspense. Toying with a subtle surrealism, he uses aesthetic interruptions to play with illusion, surface and depth. Haunting landscapes of unconscious feeling, his paintings beg a variety of questions, alluding to possible narratives through the use of symbolic motifs and atmospheric effect. The pictures refrain from overt description however, rather allowing a space for the viewer to be seduced by the mystery, and to get lost in its painstaking detail. By playing to the psychology of our attraction to the unknown, Randall’s work poses a challenge – to continue moving forward, deeper into the maze, through the tunnel, hurtling across the sky, and towards the future
