S.E. Manly African American Film Festival On Tour Benefiting Tech Exchange

Welcome to the S.E. Manly African American Film Festival On Tour benefiting Tech Exchange! This is a unique, one-time fundraiser to feature films from the Black Hollywood Education and Resource Center (BHERC) based in Los Angeles, and celebrating 30 years of supporting and promoting Black and diverse filmmakers. The event is a fundraiser to benefit Oakland-based Tech Exchange, dedicated for 29 years to close the Digital Divide.

On July 13, BHERC will be featuring film shorts award-winning and inspiring films from Black and diverse filmmakers. We're excited to feature one of the first films created by Oakland native Ryan Coogler, of Fruitvale Station, Creed II and Black Panther fame. The film festival will include family-friendly and PG+ films.

Not only will you get to enjoy the films, but we will also host a Q &A session with the filmmakers. In addition we will host 2 panels for further discussion. You won't want to miss this unique day of inspiring film and thoughtful conversation on the role of computers, closing the Digital Divide and empowering more filmmakers to direct and produce their stories and the films we enjoy.

This in-person event, being held at the Regal Theatre, Jack London Square in Oakland, is a fantastic opportunity to support Black and diverse film, filmmakers, and closing the digital divide, bringing the arts, both digital and film, together! BHERC and Tech Exchange join forces to celebrate Black and diverse filmmakers, many from right here in Oakland and the Bay Area, with an opportunity to raise funds to continue the work of Tech Exchange, and provide digital tools and skills for the next generation of filmmakers and more. Enjoy a day of powerful short films!!

The was founded in1996, by Sandra Evers-Manly to remove the veil of invisibility that shrouds African Americans and other diverse groups from the main stage, and to spotlight diversity and the stellar contributions of black film and television artists who brought dignity and professionalism to even the most menial of roles.

was founded by Bruce Buckelew, a pioneer in addressing the digital divide through green technology solutions. After retiring from IBM Bruce began volunteering at Oakland Technical High School. With the help of students, he began refurbishing computers to provide to families in need. Bruce has since retired a second time, and Tech Exchange continues the work he started for nearly 29 years, obtaining a 501c3 in 2024. Tech Exchange continues to provide free and low cost refurbished computers, along with digital literacy training, assistance in finding and connecting to low cost Internet plans, and multi-lingual tech support to low-income families, schools, community centers and more.
