South Dakota Symphony Orchestra performs the live score to The New Babylon. A classic of Soviet cinema, The New Babylon (1929) magnificently mates propaganda with art. Its topic is an historic workers’ uprising: the 1871 Paris Commune. Shostakovich’s continuous film score – his first of many, composed at the age of 23 – documents the passion and barbed humor of a young genius. The film, accordingly, enthrallingly combines satire and high drama. SDSO will present The New Babylon with live music -- the same 18-piece theater orchestra Russian audiences experienced during the pre-Stalin cultural heyday of the Bolshevik Revolution.
