About this Event
The trackbed of the original 1825 Stockton and Darlington Railway runs through the garden of South Lodge, Preston Park. This was the first passenger railway in the world to use steam trains. The line through the Park was only in use between 1825 and 1852 and therefore offers a unique snapshot of the original track.
The area chosen for excavation is the only area within the grounds of PPMG not to be part of the Scheduled Monument and is located within the grounds of the South Lodge. We are returning here following our April excavation, to further investigate specific features and answer questions that the previous dig raised.
This is a very important year for the S&DR as it is the 200th anniversary.
The excavation will be led by Emma Watson of Tees Archaeology. No previous experience is necessary. The archaeological excavation will take place outdoors and will involve some physical exertion. Volunteeers will need to wear appropriate outdoor footwear and clothing.
The volunteer day will be from 10am to 3pm, with breaks throughout the day. Drinks and Scooby snacks will be provided, but volunteers will need to source their own lunch.
Volunteer numbers are limited, so please book early to avoid diappointment!
There is free parking at Preston Park. There are welfare facilities at Preston Park, including toilets and a cafe.
