Presented by the SCAD Museum of Art's Walter and Linda Evans Center for African American Studies, two films trace the lives and impact of Hilton Head Island’s Gullah Geechee community and Savannah’s Women of Vision. Descendants of enslaved West and Central Africans who gained freedom prior to Emancipation, the Gullah Geechee preserve deep cultural customs along the coastal Southeast. Exploring the resonant history and enduring philosophy of Hilton Head Island’s Gullah Geechee community, the documentary The Spirit We Move With also showcases their contemporary influence. The film is a collaboration between director and award-winning documentarian Andrew Maguire along with executive producer and sixth-generation Gullah descendant Omolola “Lola” Campbell. Told through a yearlong collection of interviews and an immersive narrative, The Spirit We Move With reveals how resilience has weathered generations of challenges while safeguarding traditions. Join Campbell for an insightful introduction of the film before watching this moving testament to strength, identity, and survival.
This screening’s second feature emphasizes stories of the Savannah Women of Vision brought to life in the SCAD-original Etched in History, narrated by celebrated actor Phylicia Rashad. Evoking the honorees’ adamantine strength and grace, this film presents a unifying message of an inclusive future in which leading women openly thrive in glory and acclaim. Envisioned by SCAD President and Founder Paula Wallace, the Savannah Women of Vision investiture is bestowed on accomplished women of peerless valor, altruism, and intellect. Be witness to the invaluable impact these women impart on the Savannah community and across the U.S.
This event is free and open to the public. RSVP to Andreia Wardlaw at [email protected].
