About this Event
Rooted in Octavia E. Butler's Parable series, the legacy of the Black Panther Party for Self Defense, and the diaspora of the global south, EARTH SEED enacts radical hospitality as a survival practice. This documentary film follows People's Kitchen Collective (PKC) and their People's Journey from March-June of 2023 through five regions of California, loosely based on the path North which was taken in Butler's The Parable of the Sower. This ongoing project that brings together food culture, ancestral wisdom, and community building is named EARTH SEED to honor Butler's vision for a braver future.
Please join us for this special event as part of the "Screening Food" film series in the Mellon Sawyer Seminar, Thinking Food at the Intersections. The screening of Earth Seed will be followed by conversation with filmmaker, Fox Nakai, and co-director/executive producer, Jocelyn Jackson. Food and refreshments will also be provided.
Jocelyn Jackson's passion for seasonal food, social justice, creativity, and community is rooted in a childhood spent on the Kansas plains. Since then, she has practiced law, taught environmental science and ethics, become a yoga instructor, and created performance and visual art. Jocelyn collaborates with a wide range of wonderful people and organizations including People’s Community Market, BALLE, Bryant Terry, Life is Living, Impact HUB Oakland, MOAD, Kitchen Table Advisors, NUMI Tea, YES!, and Late Nite Art. In addition to co-founding PKC, Jocelyn also founded JUSTUS KITCHEN to continue to create food experiences that inspire people to reconnect with themselves, the earth, and one another.
