It received widespread critical acclaim on release for its direction, screenplay, cinematography, and performancesโparticularly those of Jack Nicholson, Faye Dunaway and John Huston. Writing in 2013, upon its re-release, critic Peter Bradshaw wrote: โWhat the passage of time has done for this superlative film is progressively lessen our sense of its being simply a modern pastiche of the classic 30s gumshoe thrillers. The time-gap has narrowed, and it now looks like a classic in a direct line of succession to those earlier pictures.โฆ The dialogue is crackling (โAre you alone?โ โ โIsnโt everyone?โ) and the set pieces, like the one in the anti-semitic old peopleโs home, are just superb. Unmissable.โ [DURATION 2 hours 11 minutes]
