About this Event
In this accessible, beginner-friendly workshop with printmaker and artist Wendy Roby, you’ll spend the morning learning how to screen print onto fabric using stencils made from paper and recycled materials. After learning good, basic screen printing technique, we’ll talk about how to balance line, form and colour, producing a half metre textile of your own design. You’ll leave some of the fabric unprinted, ready to fill with beautiful, simple modern embroidery.
In the afternoon, you’ll choose an area of your textile to develop, and we’ll talk about ways to ‘resolve’ the piece - adding rhythmic marks via simple, graphic stitches. In this mindful, relaxing session, you’ll fill the negative spaces with simple embroidery and appliques made from screen-printed fabric.
At the end of the day, you’ll take home an original piece of textile art; framed in an embroidery hoop and ready to hang on your wall.
Artist bio:
Wendy is a printmaker and textile artist from Stockport who has exhibited and sold her work across Greater Manchester. She makes small and large scale visual art inspired by modernism, cultural ephemera, class and feminism. Her last exhibition explored the Herculean efforts of Jill Capes (wife of strong man Geoff) who had to prepare 12,000 calories for him, every day.
Resourcefulness is a key part of her practice and she makes her own inks from natural materials gathered from around Manchester (reduced-aisle avocados; old bits of copper; knobbly oak galls). Her ‘Prints Made From Plants’ series of botanical screen prints are sold in the Whitworth Gallery in Manchester and she is developing a range of textile and homewares using these wonderful, natural colours. Her teaching specialism is a method of screen printing you can easily do at home without needing lots of time, equipment, space and materials.
