About this Event
Benhura’s paintings are made up of multiple layers of often different, and often found materials. They are created through a hands-on process involving accumulation, painting and removal. They effortlessly shift between abstraction and figuration while prioritising the ornate, textured, and detailed.
No matter how significant or insignificant they seem, another layer is added. At times they are almost invisible but they can also represent exciting changes and cherished memories or mask memories that have been long forgotten (deliberately or not).
In this exhibition, Benhura builds up each piece layer upon layer creating a ‘body’ using a range of materials, often from discarded materials he has found, each carrying their own personal histories. Once the ‘body’ has been completed, Benhura starts the excavation process. Scratching, slashing and scarring the work, each cut and mark reveals something new.
At times Benhura goes so deep he creates a wound, revealing the stark rawness and vulnerability of the base material, reminiscent of a delicate or painful memory that has been buried. As the viewer explores the terrain of the works vivid colours seep into each other, there is a harness and softness in the materials and patches of colours are applied like plasters to the works.
Benhura’s artworks arrive through repeatedly being buried and rediscovered, destroyed and recreated and it is through this approach the painting practice develops its own distinct character.
