About this Event

All DIYD workshops have Pay What You Can ticket options.

If the Full Cost Ticket is financially comfortable for you, we ask that you purchase this ticket to help DIYD offset the costs of workshop expenses.

If the Full Cost Ticket is a stretch for you at this time, choose a lower cost ticket that suits your financial capacity. Choose the “Pay What You Can” option to purchase a ticket for as low as $1.

If you would like to make a donation to DIYD, choose the 125% cost ticket option or use the Pay What You Can option to make a donation of any amount. (And thank you!)

About This Workshop:

This workshop is for kids ages 5-12.

A class for kids, created by kids! Thanks to The Dapper Hammer (Kalamazoo) for letting us use their super fun youth class idea! Here's what their director has to say about the idea behind this workshop: "A couple years ago, after spending the holiday season making dozens of cutting boards, planters, and candle holders, I was left with buckets of really cool scraps and off cuts. My kids came to the shop with me one evening and while I was cleaning, they raided the scrap bin and started sanding, gluing, nailing, and screwing these scrap pieces together into what my daughter called 'Scrappy Sculptures.'"
In this class, youth will learn about different varieties and colors of wood, learn to use sanders, screwdrivers, clamps, speed squares, and most of all – their imagination! There’s no limit to what kids can create with the time and space to explore new ideas. The class will begin with an introduction and safety talk, some short tool demonstrations, and then students will design and create their own sculpture using hand tools, scrap wood, and glue.

Adults

  • When purchasing a ticket, please enter your child's name and age.
  • Upon arrival, please drop your child off by walking them into the building and complete a youth waiver before class begins.
  • There is not much extra room in our space for parents to stay and wait during our workshop, but we'd recommend hanging out down the street at BLOC Coffee (801 Mt. Hope Ave. 45205)
  • Please plan to return to Casa Colina 10 minutes early to pick up your kiddo at the conclusion of class.

Safety

Students will use hand tools and learn to operate a palm sander. They will also get to see an adult use a miter saw. Students will be provided with child-sized safety goggles and noise canceling ear muffs, which will be required at all times when standing near power tools. Masks are optional and not provided, please send your child with a mask if you prefer for them to wear one.
Additional notes:

  • Upon arrival, please complete a waiver for your youth before class begins
  • Please wear closed-toed shoes
  • Avoid wearing clothing with long ties (ie no hoodie strings)
  • Any long hair should be tied/clipped back
  • Sanitized eye and ear protection will be provided

Annie Darlin Gordon is the founder and director of Do It Yourself Darlin. Annie's knowledge of home renovation skills was developed in 2018 during her AmeriCorps service term on the Construction Crew at Habitat for Humanity, where she built new construction houses from the ground up. For the next 3 years, Annie worked on the carpentry/installer teams with two private Cincinnati-based home renovation companies, and operated solo during the first phase of DIYD, before establishing the Do It Yourself Darlin workshop program in 2022. Annie owns a 1916 home in East Price Hill and is also a professionally trained flutist who performs and teaches in the Greater Cincinnati Area.
