LEARN SCOTTISH STEP DANCING
Scottish step dancing is a performance-oriented form of dance similar to Highland dance but encompassing a wider variety of styles. Curious to give it a try? Fligmagearie is offering a beginner's course for adults on Monday nights, 6:30pm-7:30pm, beginning November 7th, at Tapestry Folkdance Center, with a two-hour kick-off workshop on Saturday or Sunday, November 5 or 6 (exact time and date TBD based on availability of participants).
Fligmagearie Scottish Step Dancers is a Twin Cities-based group formed over 30 years ago. We are adults of all ages and sizes who are interested in cooperatively learning and occasionally performing both traditional and modern Scottish step dances.
Suitable for all genders (18 and over please). No prior dance experience is required, but familiarity with ballet, Irish step, and/or Scottish country dancing is helpful, and physical ability to jump and hop is expected. Wear comfortable clothing and soft-soled shoes (ballet slippers, jazz shoes, Irish dance pumps, or Scottish ghillies are ideal).
The course will run through the end of January, with a few breaks for holidays (kick-off workshop plus 9 sessions in total). Registration is just $48 for the session, payable by cash, check or Venmo on the first night. Contact Lara Friedman-Shedlov ([email protected]) for more information or to sign up. PLEASE SIGN-UP BY EMAIL BY OCT 17 in order to have your scheduling preferences considered for the kick-off workshop the weekend of November 5-6.
NOTE: This is not the percussive style of dance (similar to clogging or Cape Breton step) that is also referred to as "Scottish step dancing." This is a more balletic style danced in soft shoes.
