The Large Hadron Collider (LHC), located at CERN outside Geneva, Switzerland, is the largest machine and scientific experiment ever built. In this talk, particle physicist Dr. Andrew Larkoski will guide you on an insider’s tour of the LHC, from the acceleration of billions of protons, to their collisions 40 million times a second along the 18 mile ring, to the detection of particles in detectors the size of the entire OMSI building. Along the way, we will meet the Higgs boson, the final piece of the Standard Model of particle physics discovered at the LHC in 2012, and see where scientists are searching to make the next discoveries.
Science Pubs are a casual lecture series located in fun venues across the region, recommended for ages 10 and over.
