In this richly illustrated talk, we enter the world of the Victorian illusionists. Drawing on our vibrant collection of entertainment posters, we will meet all manner of supernatural apparitions—including devils, skeletons, and a flying rabbit.
Hear how these were created using a then-novel illusion called Pepper’s Ghost. Named after the scientist John Henry Pepper and jointly created with engineer and inventor Henry Dircks, Pepper’s Ghost uses lights, mirrors, and hidden rooms. Properly combined, these elements allowed Victorian illusionists such as Maskelyne and Cooke to conduct ‘dark séances.’
