Join us for a thought-provoking evening of Science on Screen as we present Imagining the Future: 2001: A Space Odyssey, Stanley Kubrick's visionary cinematic masterpiece that continues to shape how we imagine the future. Acclaimed physicist and author Alan Lightman will explore the remarkable achievements of science and technology from past centuries through the present day, including the rapidly evolving world of artificial intelligence. Drawing connections to Kubrick's bold vision, Lightman will reflect on where we have been, where we are now, and what the future may hold.
A fascinating conversation at the intersection of film, science, and imagination.
Tickets are $6.00. Doors open at 6:30 pm.
Science on Screen® series has enhanced film and scientific literacy with this popular program, which launched at the Coolidge in 2005 in partnership with the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and its pioneering nationwide film program.
Over the past decade, Sloan has awarded the Coolidge over $4 million to develop and administer Science on Screen programs around the US through partnerships with other nonprofits. The Coolidge has in turn awarded over $2.75 million in grants to 131 film and science-focused organizations in 45 states (plus Washington, DC) across the country.
Throughout the academic year, SoS creatively pairs screenings of classic, cult, science fiction, and documentary films with lively presentations by notable experts from the world of science and technology. Each film is used as a jumping-off point for a speaker to introduce current research or technological advances in a manner that engages popular culture audiences—from the function of the amygdala in the zombie brains of Night of the Living Dead to how far epidemiology has come since The Andromeda Strain.
The Campus Theatre is proud to be one of 41 theatres participating in the 2025-2026 SoS series!
