As part of the 2025 Biggar Science Festival, Science Cafés will be running every week day - September 8 - 12th.Prof. Tim Miller will show the enormous (and increasing) importance of electric machines (generators and motors) in the generation and application of electric power, with examples from electric vehicle and railway traction, domestic appliances, aerospace applications, agriculture, and essential industrial processes. The talk will include some basic scientific principles of physics and metallurgy, drawing attention to several key historic contributions of Scots engineers and scientists and indicating where to find them. Particular attention will be drawn to the extraordinary developments in the automotive industry and in wind turbines, with an eye to their profound implications in our ecosystem. Some samples will be on display from Motivity Ltd. in Galashiels.
