About this Event
Students in 4th grade at Kiona-Benton Elementary School participated in a cross-curricular unit of study, learning about the connections between art, ballet dance, and wave science. This event serves as a public showcase of their art, where students demonstrate their learning and understanding of the unit. Tours of the LIGO facility are available for guests, as well as dance performances from dance artists at The Mid-Columbia Ballet.
Doors at the LIGO Exploration Center (LExC) open at 5 PM. Guests are free to explore the art showcase as well as the many interactive and static LExC exhibits, and (if they would like) take a tour of the LIGO facility. Tours will depart from the LExC at scheduled times and return to the LExC after. Dance artists from The Mid-Columbia Ballet will perform throughout the tour and at designated spots around the LIGO Hanford Observatory.
In conjunction with the dance performances, the walking tour will visit several stops, including the one point on the site where you can see both of the interferometer's 4km-long arms reaching into the Eastern Washington shrub steppe. A highlight for many guests is the interferometer's control room, where you will learn even more about LIGO directly from the people who maintain and operate the world's most sensitive measuring device. Questions enthusiastically welcome anywhere along your tour!
