What is Scent Detection?
A fun, stimulating primal activity that engages the dogs olfactory system (sense of smell) stimulating the brain to identify and search for a variety of interesting scents in a stimulating range of varying environments.
Your dog could quickly become a doggy detective!
Why Scent Detection & what are the benefits?
The Uk Sniffer Dogs Scent Detection training is much less physically impacting on a dogs body (and possibly the owners!) than some other sports whilst providing increased mental and lower level physical exercise.
Mental stimulation provides your dog a job to do which in turn, helps prevent them becoming “Self-Employed”!
The mental stimulation combined with the physical aspect can mean that 10-minutes of scent activity is more tiring than 1-hour of running meaning it is ideal for dogs of all ages, physical abilities and social tolerances.
Scentwork has been scientifically proven to help dogs be happy - sniffing helps release happy endorphins.
In addition, Scentwork can help reduce stress and anxiety. Mindfulness for dogs - giving nervous, anxious & insecure dogs something positive to focus on instead of their usual habits.
Social opportunities for not just your dog but for you also - you may even make friends with another client, many do!
Additional grades are also available to provide continuity.
How do you get involved?
The primary route into UK Sniffer Dogs Scent Detection training will be via a six-session course held at our East Devon training centre.
Also, for fun but also to test yourselves, we will be holding Scent Detection time trials 3-4 times per year. In these trials you will compete against your course colleagues, other scent detection handers on different Scent Detection courses and even people who have trained outside of WildDogz - you never know, you may even win a gold rosette!!
We have indoor and outdoor training options and although training will primarily be outside, in poor weather we can switch to one of our indoor options instead.
You may bring more than one dog but places are charged per dog participating and as on all our courses, places are strictly limited.
