A lovely, lowland walk in the Ribble Valley with gentle rolling hills and beautiful views all round. Starting from the picturesque historic village of Bolton-by-Bowland, this 10.5 mile / 17km route meanders its way across farmland, between rivers and through woodlands. The area is teeming with wildlife - I have never encountered so many hares and deer! We pass the impressive Sawley Hall on the banks of the River Ribble and a short detour takes us to the ruins of a medieval Cistercian monastery; Sawley Abbey. From there we pass through the quirky site of the Beat Herder Festival before continuing on towards Gisburn. A stretch on Gisburn Road takes us back to Bolton-by-Bowland through Bolton Park on the River Valley Jubilee Trail.
This route is of little elevation (905ft / 276m), so would suit those who hate a climb, but be prepared for plenty mud and stiles. The terrain is a mix of tarmac roads, grassy fields, and short sections of woodland.
This walk would be taken at an easy - moderate pace; aiming to complete the walk within 5.5 hours, including rest / lunch breaks.
Well behaved, friendly (with people and other dogs) dogs are welcome, but must be agile enough to climb stiles or small enough to be lifted. Please also note that we will be passing through many fields of sheep, so be prepared to have your dog on a lead for the majority of this route.
This small-group guided walk is professionally led by a qualified Mountain Leader and Outdoor First Aider / Mental Health First Aider, with full PL insurance. Tickets cost £15 per person. Booking is essential as places are limited.
Details of what to bring and where to meet will be emailed or sent in the WhatsApp chat on booking, but please get in touch if you need further details beforehand. We walk in ALL weather, so please take note of the Kit List that will be sent out on booking.
