Riggan Thomson is drawing on his past fame as the superhero "Birdman". He wants to prove himself as a serious artist on Broadway with a play he is directing based on a Raymond Carver story. After his leading man is hit by a spotlight, Riggan finds a popular replacement who, however, has a bigger ego than Riggan and takes method acting too seriously. Trouble and nightmares ensue for the ambitious director, along with the costs, his ex-wife and mistress, a tough cultural critic and his daughter.

Er will sich mit einem von ihm inszenierten Stück einer Raymond Carver Story am Broadway als ernsthafter Künstler beweisen. Nachdem sein Hauptdarsteller von einem Scheinwerfer getroffen wurde, findet Riggan einen populären Ersatz, der jedoch ein größeres Ego als Riggan hat und es mit dem Method Acting zu ernst nimmt. Ärger und Alpträume bescheren dem ehrgeizigen Regisseur neben den Kosten auch Ex-Frau und Geliebte, eine knallharte Kultur-Kritikerin und seine Tochter.
