Tartan Day is held on April 6, the date on which the Scotland's Declaration of Arbroathwas signed in 1320. The Savannah Scottish Games is excited to informally gather on April 6, 2026 for a special Tartan Day Celtic celebration of 250 years in the USA. Tartan Day promotes Scottish heritage and is well placed to gear up for the 48th Annual Savannah Scottish Games on May 2nd. "As long as but a hundred of us remain alive, never will we on any conditions be brought under English rule. It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours, that we are fighting, but for freedom - for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself "🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿✊

History: Tartan Day began as a provincial holiday in the 1980’s in Nova Scotia, Canada. Fast forward — Argentina, the United States, New Zealand, Canada as well as Scotland celebrate Tartan Day. On April 6, 1320, Scottish magnates and nobles gathered at Arbroath Abbey to set their seals on a letter to Pope John XXII. This document, called the Declaration of Arbroath, asserted Scotland’s status as an independent, sovereign nation with the right to use force of arms if unjustly attacked. It has been called “the Scottish Declaration of Independence” and many believe it was a strong influence on the Founding Fathers of the United States. A great number of the founding fathers were of Scottish descent. And Thomas Jefferson, who wrote our Declaration of Independence, had a Scottish tutor. So even if they did not refer directly to the ancient document, it is quite reasonable to imagine that its spirit was passed down to these brave men culturally.
