2023 Bott Frigyes Furmint $35.94
Following World War I, Hungary lost approximately 71% of its territory to neighboring countries, leaving more than three million ethnic Hungarians outside modern-day Hungary. Despite shifting borders, many of the region’s historic wine traditions and indigenous grape varieties continued to thrive beyond Hungary’s present boundaries. One such example is Bott Frigyes, located on the southern slopes of the Mužla Hills in Slovakia, surrounded by the Garam, Danube, and Ipoly rivers.
Bott Frigyes and his son Frici cultivate 10 hectares of vineyards overlooking the Garam River at 250 meters above sea level. This wine is 100% Furmint from the Južnoslovenská region. The grapes are pressed into traditional Tokaji oak barrels, where the wine ferments and ages on its lees for eight months.
2024 Domaine du Centaure Les Eliades Scheurebe $44.94
The history of Domaine du Centaure dates back to the late 14th century. In 1925, Edmond Ramu pioneered the use of Guyot training on wires in Switzerland and experimented with planting new grape varieties. Today, the fourth generation continues that innovative spirit, showcasing the diversity of Geneva’s wine culture.
This is the estate’s Scheurebe bottling, a grape originally developed in Germany that has become a rare and highly sought-after variety in Switzerland. Like Kerner, Scheurebe is a crossing involving Riesling and the now-extinct Bukettraube. The wine is aged in tank and bottled within one year of harvest.
2022 Viña Cota Oklaj $27.94
Viña Cota is run by Petar Cota in Croatia’s Dalmatian region, between the southwestern slopes of Promina Mountain and the southern bank of the Krka River. The family’s story mirrors the turbulent history of the region. In the early 1900s, Petar’s great-grandfather Marko emigrated to Seattle, returning home 17 years later with enough savings to plant vineyards, build a home, and construct a cellar.
The decades that followed brought World War II, the Yugoslav era—which effectively ended private commercial winemaking for more than 45 years—and the Croatian and Bosnian wars. It wasn’t until Petar’s father replanted vineyards that the family’s winegrowing legacy resumed. Petar became the first generation to bottle wines from these vineyards, releasing his inaugural commercial vintage in 2020.
This co-fermented blend is dominated by Lasina, one of Croatia’s rarest indigenous red grapes, alongside Plavina and Merlot. The grapes are fermented in a combination of polyethylene tanks, stainless steel, and used oak barrels.
2023 Vinarija Dalia Splet $29.94
Vinarija Dalia is the project of a young winemaker who has helped reinvigorate Serbia’s modern wine scene. After studying enology and viticulture in Italy, she gained experience in Sardinia, Beaujolais, Chile, New Zealand, California, Spain, and France before returning home to Serbia. There, she partnered with renowned Burgundian producer Étienne de Montille, who recognized the potential of Serbian terroir.
This wine comes from the Timok region, just three kilometers from the Timok River. The area benefits from approximately 265 days of sunshine annually and significant day-to-night temperature variation, allowing the grapes to achieve both ripeness and freshness.
The vineyard is farmed organically, and fermentation is carried out with native yeasts in open-top vessels. The blend is 80% Gamay and 20% Vranac, a thick-skinned grape indigenous to Eastern Europe, particularly Montenegro. The wine is aged for 10 months in used Serbian and French oak barrels and is bottled unfined, unfiltered, and without added sulfur.
2023 Kozlović Teran $31.94
The Kozlović family has called the Vale Valley in northwestern Istria home since 1904. Located near the borders of Italy and Slovenia, the family has spent four generations preserving indigenous Istrian grape varieties while continually advancing vineyard and cellar practices.
This wine is made from Teran, a red grape native to the Istrian Peninsula. The grapes are destemmed and fermented in stainless steel tanks, with a portion fermented in oak barrels. The wine is then matured for 12 months in stainless steel tanks and large 5,000-liter oak casks.
2017 Karner Gábor Tavaszföld Kékfrankos $53.94
Karner Gábor is one of Hungary’s most respected producers, based in Mátra, the country’s second-largest wine region. Vineyards have been cultivated here since at least 1042. Volcanic soils, low disease pressure, and protection from extreme weather create ideal conditions for organic and regenerative farming.
Gábor founded the estate in 2000 and now works alongside his daughter, Fanni. Together they are members of an organic farming association, and since 2017 have produced wines without any additives. Gábor is famous for saying, “Sulfur kills the tiny happiness fairies who live inside the wine.”
This wine is made from 100% Kékfrankos and is aged for 18 months in large Hungarian oak barrels.
