About this Event

Part of our monthly Saturday improv drop-in workshop series at The Old Hairdressers
Johnre (Genre)- with John McInnes
Improvisers love references, whether it's a movie, tv show or some other genre they spend all their off-stage time consuming. Another group that likes genre based improv is audiences! Some of the most popular improv shows of all time heavily feature genre based scenework.
In this workshop we'll work on the central challenge of good genre based improv; understanding and committing to the implied base reality. In genre based improv, you're going to have to go "super saiyan" without laughing. Someone will label you as "Sir Gideon Ofnir, the All-Knowing" and you will have to immediately be whoever that is swiftly and confidently even if you don't know who it is.

Does that sound scary? Fun? Both? Well, maybe genre improv is for you. So take this workshop if you're a pop culture nerd who wants to bring your hobbies on stage or if you're curious about understanding the fundamental basics of "The Movie" form (hint hint wink wink).
John McInnes has been doing longform improv since 2014 and loves it, particularly "The Harold". He's studied improv at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre and has learned from Carleen MacDermid, Will Hines, Billy Merritt, Julie Brister... and many more. In 2016 he co-founded Bristol's Kitchen Rules Theatre and was a member of every cool improv team in Bristol from 2016-2023. He is now a member of Couch and has performed at the Del Close Marathon, Amsterdam Improv Marathon, Hoopla Improv Marathon and the Robin Hood International Improv Festival (not a marathon).
