2025 Big Idea: Inside/Outside:
Sometimes we seek to be part of the in-crowd and feel left uncomfortable when we are left out(side). Other times we happily live outside…of society, in nature, off grid. We live and work inside in houses, apartments, schools, and offices. We walk and play outside in gardens, parks, playgrounds, streets, and neighborhoods. Inside and outside places and spaces guide and determine our movement, engagement, knowing, and understanding. So too does our inner landscape, our interior lives, emotions, thoughts, and dreams/hopes create opportunities to make meaning when they come into contact with outside cultural narratives, new experiences, and social expectations. Meaning is made at any point where we reflect upon the separateness of the inside and the outside as well as the sameness of inside and outside. But most powerful may be when inside and outside come into contact in some way–in the doorways, thresholds, foyers, porches and borderlands; through the windows, archways, and lookouts, be they literal or figurative–this is where meaning is made.
