Megan McGurk introduces a gem in The Dot Theatre.
The Gilded Lily (1935)
In many classic Hollywood love triangles, the star’s choice is a foregone conclusion. No one really believes that Rosalind Russell fancies Ralph Bellamy over Cary Grant. And even while she was married to him, no one thinks Joan Crawford prefers Franchot Tone to Clark Gable. But in The Gilded Lily (1935), Paramount twists the plot by giving Claudette Colbert’s stenographer the pick between two credible swoon merchants. Fred MacMurray plays a slick reporter who enjoys kicking off his shoes, eating popcorn, and watching the world go by. Ray Milland plays an English nobleman who keeps his title under wraps after a darling meet-cute in the subway. Claudette follows her heart in sumptuous designs by Travis Banton, which range from smart office ensembles to outlandish feather-trimmed evening gowns. Not to be missed!
Stay tuned for additional Sass Mouth Dames Film Club screenings on 19 December and 9 and 16 January.
