About this Event
Bandleader, producer and percussionist Sarathy Korwar and writer and musician Ammar Kalia celebrate the paperback launch of Ammar's debut novel with a discussion about their South Asian diaspora art, an audience Q&A, signing and exclusive performance.
Sarathy has released four acclaimed albums that traverse the worlds of jazz improvisation, Indian classical tradition, poetry and electronic experimentation. Tackling themes of migration and cross-cultural identity with a fiery blend of radical self-expression and rhythm, Sarathy has been the recipient of an AIM Award, MOJO Jazz Album of the Year, and nominee for the Jazz FM Awards, Gilles Peterson's Worldwide Awards and the Songlines Awards. He has also collaborated with Anoushka Shankar, Auntie Flo, Bex Burch and Tamar Osborn, and is currently working on his fifth record.
Ammar is a writer and musician. He has been the Guardian's Global Music Critic since 2019 and regularly contributes to The Observer, Crack Magazine, Downbeat, Jazzwise, Apple Music and other publications. His debut poetry collection and accompanying album, Kintsugi: Jazz Poems for Musicians Alive and Dead, was released in 2020 and his debut novel, A Person Is A Prayer, was released by Oldcastle Books in hardback in 2024. Telling a fictionalised story of his family's migration from India to Kenya to England, the novel takes place over three individual days that span six decades. It was shortlisted for the Unbound Firsts Award and has been featured in Vogue, GQ, Esquire, i-D, The Guardian, Harpers Bazaar and Dazed.
Join us for a conversation on art and identity, as well as the chance to witness an exclusive performance and to purchase advance signed copies of A Person Is A Prayer.
