This June at the Star & Shadow Cinema, we’re screening DARRELL ROODT’S powerful musical drama SARAFINA!Created to mark the 50th anniversary of the Soweto Uprising, SARAFINA! tells a story of resistance, solidarity and the fight against apartheid through the lives of young South African students refusing to stay silent.
Based on Mbongeni Ngema’s acclaimed stage musical, the film follows Sarafina and her classmates as they are inspired by their teacher Mary Masombuka, played by Whoopi Goldberg, to challenge the brutality and injustice surrounding them during one of the most turbulent periods in South African history.
Blending music, protest and powerful performances, SARAFINA! captures both the anger and hope of a generation demanding change. The film also features the legendary Miriam Makeba as Sarafina’s mother, bringing even greater emotional force to this landmark work of anti apartheid cinema.
The screening takes place in solidarity with Newcastle’s “UBUNTU” – I Am Because You Are / Race for Peace event and will include an introduction from UBUNTU founder Tim Cantle-Jones.
