In salsa, **“shines”** refer to solo footwork sequences traditionally danced when partners “break apart” during the music. Rooted in Afro-Caribbean movement traditions and heavily influenced by jazz, mambo, and the social dance culture of New York and Cuba, shines became especially popular during the mambo and salsa boom of the 1960s and 70s. Legendary dancers used shines as a way to showcase rhythm, creativity, and personal style while staying connected to the music.
**Styling** developed alongside shines as dancers began adding arm styling, body movement, spins, texture, and musical interpretation to elevate their dancing beyond simply executing patterns.
